Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Jul 2023

After the Clairette, this wine seems a little muted – not offering the instant gratification of its Pure partner. But, although the wine doesn’t reveal itself fully on the waxy nose, the palate is expansive, mouth-filling with a pleasing oiliness, curls of ripe lemon peel, a taut, mineral line, and a touch of honey. Fulsome and striking, this needs air or time in bottle to unfurl a little more. Exclusively bottled in magnum.

All varietal brought up in 40% new barrels (the balance in is foudre), the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Pure Roussanne brings a richer, bigger style and is loaded with ripe orchard fruits, brioche, toasted spice, and honeysuckle-like aromas and flavors. Broader and more expansive, it’s medium to full-bodied and has good acidity and a great finish. This is pure brilliant in Southern Rhône whites and is going to evolve for 15 years if well stored.

100% Roussanne. Vinified and aged for eight months in foudres (60%) and new oak barrels (40%). Certified organic and biodynamic. Tasted blind. Pure golden fruit with a crystalline edge on the nose. Lovely energy here, with a dense fruit core. This is showy, opulent and heady but wonderfully underpinned by fresh, mineral salinity. A note of tinned peach on the unctuous, layered finish.
