Bright purple. A heady, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes dark fruit preserves, vanilla, sandalwood and candied flowers. Creamy and seamless on the palate, offering intense blueberry and cassis flavors and a zesty blast of smoky minerals. Rich but lively, with outstanding finishing clarity and spiciness.

I have often thought the Cuvee Juline (a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah aged in new oak) was pushing the modern philosophy a little too far, but I must say that the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Juline has turned out far better than I thought it would. It is unquestionably made in a modern style, but the wine’s purity and good integration of oak, acidity and tannin are well-done. This full-bodied, rich, concentrated, pure, authentic tasting Chateauneuf du Pape should drink nicely for two decades. Founded in 1924 by the Autard family, the young generation headed by Paul Autard continues to go from strength to strength, fashioning wines that are modern-styled, yet retain plenty of Provencal authenticity. There 62-acres of vineyards are situated in the commune of Courthezon, in the northeastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. Autard’s first attempt at a relatively modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape was the Cuvee La Cote Ronde, which I believe made its debut in 1998. This is an equal part blend of Grenache and Syrah from 65-year-old vines aged in small oak, of which an elevated percentage is new. Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel. (a 50/50 blend of grenache and syrah fermented and raised in 100% new barriques): Glass-staining purple. Powerful cassis and blueberry aromas are accented by sexy oak and incense qualities. Lush, creamy, palate-coating black and blue fruit compote flavors are enlivened by a spicy quality and turn smokier with air. Very rich but almost shockingly energetic as well, finishing with excellent cling and floral persistence.

Bright to pale crimson. Warm and welcoming nose. Very sweet and rich start and then quite marked tannins. Some astringency on the finish but this is not that concentrated overall. (JR)
