Roero. Healthy mid ruby with orange tinges. Impressive minerality on the nose with savoury saline cherry fruit. Real nobility. Sleek and still a little closed with fine, grainy tannins woven into the fruit. Very long and precise. (WS)

The 2019 Nebbiolo D'Alba was tasted alongside the 2023 vintage and is a case in point for the pedigree and its ability to improve with several years' time. In the glass, it has a jeweled ruby color and a refined aromatic nose of pomegranate, spices, ripe cranberry, and tangerine. The palate is elegant and starting to take on its more stony underpinnings in its texture, but it’s holding up beautifully, not falling flat in any way, and has plenty of life ahead of it. Drink 2025-2032.

The Luciano Sandrone 2019 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore Sibi et Paucis is redolent of iris root, dark fruit, tar and licorice. You feel the intensity and richness of the vintage, and the wine's aromatic profile has been enhanced with five years of bottle age. Primary notes have turned into cola, licorice and grilled rosemary. Only 1,500 bottles were held back to complete this late-release allocation.

Lustrous mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Hints of tea leaves over raspberry fruit. The palate is close to perfection – super-elegant weight and with long, clayey tannins. Perfumed and taut on the finish and not at its peak by far. (WS)
