The 2014 Rahoul, which was traditionally known as a white-producing estate, is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a conservative but well defined, gravel-tinged bouquet dominated by "correct" red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, again, a touch foursquare in the mouth but well balanced with still a touch of new oak (one-third) to be assimilated on the finish.

Ripe red cherry, smoke, tobacco and savory notes give the 2014 Rahoul its distinctive personality. Drink this exotic, rustic Graves over the next few years, before the fruit loses its intensity.

Simple redcurrant aromas, soft palate, very easy drinking and accessible – the kind of modern Bordeaux that would appeal widely. Fine tannin, lovely balance, impressive harmony. (RH)
