Glistening ruby. Highly perfumed, spice-tinged red and dark berries, potpourri and smoky minerals on the expressive nose. Supple, deeply concentrated and expansive in the mouth, offering palate-staining black raspberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors that become more lively with air. Delivers a suave blend of power and finesse and closes with fine clarity and minerally persistence, leaving red berry and lavender notes behind.

The 2019 Morgon Grand Cras wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, sweet soil tones and subtle hints of beef blood. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with appreciable reserve of rich, powdery tannins, it's derived from alluvial soils not far from the foot of the Côte du Py which seem to lend it a totally different structural profile from the other wines in the range.

Full bottle 1,355 g. In conversion to organic certification. Minty blackberries. The Godard Grand Cras is always her most brooding, intense, impenetrable wine, but the 2019 has an unusual translucency. Less sooty glower to the tannins than in previous vintages. Still lots of grip, but it's more refined. Still, it hasn't lost its granite, the chiselled rock face, the stallion toss of the head, the power. But for the first time ever, I'm tasting real grace and elegance. There is a different ruby-jewel glow and gentleness in the wine. Is this the vintage? The vineyard? Something else? Whatever it is, it's wonderful. (TC)
