The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet that needs more coaxing than its peers; a lovely crustacean scent emerges with time, allied with a hint of star anise. The edgy palate is taut, precise and well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and quite a persistent finish. Overall, it is just missing a little profundity, yet it meliorates in the glass, gaining harmony and precision. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier "Cuvée Centenaire" Grand Cru, comes from a two-year old barrel (Chassin) from the old vine selection. It has a discrete but quite intense bouquet with scents of yellow flowers, lemon curd, honeysuckle and crushed stone. The palate is very well balanced with a taut line of acidity. This feel fresh and focused, a pleasant salinity flowing through this Chevalier, boasting impressive detail and precision on the sustained finish. Bon vin!

Chartron's greatest wine is the 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Clos des Chevaliers, an immensely promising effort that wafts from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, mandarin, dried white flowers, crisp Anjou pear, pastry cream and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and structured, with superb concentration, excellent tension at the core, brisk acids, chalky dry extract and a long, mineral finish. This is an impeccably balanced Chevalier-Montrachet that can stand alongside the vintage's best. Note that Chartron will also be releasing a small barrel selection as a "Cuvée Centennaire" to commemorate the acquisition of this clos in 1917.
