(vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in 15% new oak; the average vine age here is 30 years but most of the vines are younger than that; the crop level here was down 30% in 2016): Healthy medium red. Aromas of black cherry, leather and licorice. Juicy and energetic, offering good texture but also some distinctly cool menthol and medicinal nuances. In a slightly rigid style, finishing with firm tannins. This wine only completed its malolactic fermentation in August.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Sizes includes one-third whole cluster fruit with 15% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and boysenberry fruit, crushed stone tucked just underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a little brittle in texture, but there is plenty of freshness here. It just needs a little more flesh to come through and fill in the gaps on the finish.
10% new oak and fairly young vines. 33% whole bunch. Barrel sample. Fresh, very fruity, bright and crunchy at first then a slight hole in the middle at the moment. Not nearly ready. (JR)
