From a cooler terroir norther of Saint-Emilion and 100% Merlot brought in 50% new barrels, the 2014 Château Clarisse Vieilles Vignes is a pretty, nuanced wine that excels on its complexity and elegance more than power and richness. Cherries, raspberries, hints of leafy herbs, and dried earth all emerge from this medium-bodied 2014 which has a light, graceful texture and building tannin. Give bottle a year or three and enjoy over the following decade. It’s a step back from the 2015, yet a rock-solid wine.

The 2014 Clarisse Cuvée Vieilles Vignes shows the weight and power of the 65-year-old vines in its powerful, vertical personality. Juicy dark cherry, tobacco, smoke, licorice and leather are all pushed forward in this exotic, flamboyant Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion. The blend is 85 % Merlot and 15 % Cabernet Franc, vinified in oak and aged in 50 % new French oak barrels.

The Clarisse Cuvée Vieilles Vignes emerges from a 3-hectare plot of 65 year-old vines on limestone soils. Expressive dark fruit and powerful, incisive tannins are two of the signatures, while hints of smoke, leather and new oak add aromatic intrigue. A big wine, the Vieilles Vignes is going to require a measure of patience. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, vinified in oak and aged in 50% new French oak barrels.

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Rather fruity and sumptuous. Real attack and lift. Interest and some depth though it’s definitely not more than medium bodied. (JR)
