The 2016 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has tightly packed blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose. The new oak is a little more evident than its peers and yet nicely controlled and defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well-judged acidity. The fruit profile appears to become blacker towards the final third, grippy with a touch of salinity enlivening the slightly tinny finish. A little brutish in its youth and yet it will surely come around with adequate bottle age. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves bursts with aromas of spiced plums and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied but firm and drying, with chewy tannins and some overripe characteristics. This would appear to be a swing and a miss from Chanson this year.

Silky and smooth on the palate, restrained black fruit with tightly woven tannic fuzz on the palate. Plenty of fruit power, the structure will take some time to soften. (RH)

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves was the only one of four Beaune premier crus that I felt showed a little over-maturity on the nose—rather heady and not quite as refined and detailed as the Beaune Teurons. The palate is chewy on the entry with sweet tannin, quite saline in the mouth but delivering the complexity and terroir expression that a great Les Grèves can give.
