Tasting notes
The 2016 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil/Oger is quite a bit more reticent than the 2017 tasted alongside it. There’s quite a bit of power and reserve in a Champagne that shows the more savory, earthy side of Mesnil. The oak imprint is also subtler than in the 2017. Aeration releases a captivating mélange of sage, mint and graphite to play off a core lemon confit and dried citrus fruit. The 2016 is beautifully done. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December, 2020.

The 2016 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is a small re-release of Fred Savart's first vintage for this wine. It shows the natural complexity of a Champagne that spent eight years on the lees. Tangerine peel, white flowers, pastry and light tropical overtones all grace this super-expressive offering. Readers searching for a Champagne with aromatics and flavors that develop over time will find that here. The 2016 is perhaps a bit austere on the palate, but I also don't see it improving much from this point. Aged on cork. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2024.
