FINE+RARE, Oct 2022

This is an Héritiers plot that’s just half a hectare, in the northernmost section of Chevalier-Montrachet, just above Cailleret. An exceptional site, it is cooler than other parts of Montrachet and produces a particularly delicate wine. The nose is dainty – with white fruit and scented citrus aromatics mingling subtly. It’s beautifully elegant in the mouth, fanning out on the finish as its delicate weave spreads across the palate – with notes of white-fleshed fruit, pinpoint lemon, hints of sweet spice and pure crushed chalk. Flawless.

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru has a slightly reduced nose with lemon thyme, lime and touches of beeswax coming through with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity and a waxy texture, feeling like a more phenolic Chevalier that lends weight to the finish. It does not quite have the precision and mineralité of Chartron's Clos des Chevalier but perhaps it will repay bottle age. Indeed, this does meliorate in the glass, manifesting more tension and a dab of spiciness. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is a step up from the Bâtard-Montrachet in terms of complexity and mineralité . Yellow plum and pressed flower hints emerge and lend more complexity with time. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. This Chevalier gathers momentum towards a detailed, lightly spiced finish with just the right amount of extract. The 2021 has real pedigree.
