From 20 year-old vines on granite at 300m on a site that was once within the Condrieu appellation. Aged for six months in old wooden vats. Delicate nose. The Viognier perfume needs a little coaxing out of the glass. But it's clear on the palate that it is top-quality Viognier, with that signature combination of ginger and savouriness, plus some dry (not sweet) apricot sensation. Serious wine that builds towards a peacock's-tail finish. Satin texture and already appealing. A Condrieu in all but name. But on the delicate not emphatic side. (JR)

Light, shimmering straw. Vibrant and sharply focused on the nose, displaying fresh citrus and orchard fruit aromas, along with suggestions of succulent flowers and dusty minerals. Sappy and incisive on the palate, offering intense Meyer lemon, peach and pear flavors that deepen steadily with air. In a rich yet vibrant style, with a persistent finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes. As usual, this is a dead ringer for an elegant, top-notch Condrieu.

The 2018 Viognier Le Pied de Samson comes from old vines near the estate and is a beautiful, classic Viognier that's perfect for those looking for some Condrieu character while not breaking the bank. Giving up lots of white flowers, tangerines, and lemon curd notes, it's medium-bodied, has a textbook Viognier floral edge, outstanding balance, and is a hidden gem from this great estate. Both 2017 and 2018 were scorchers for the Northern Rhône, which can be difficult for Condrieu, yet Christine Vernay has done a brilliant job in both vintages. These wines show plenty of richness and depth yet hold onto a terrific sense of purity and freshness.
