Score 93/100 · Drink 2020-2028, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2020

Geoffroy's 2004 Extra Brut Millésime (magnum) is 71% Chardonnay and 29% Pinot Noir from old vines in Cumières. Ample and creamy, with an added hint of softness from vinification in oak, the 2004 is super-expressive today. Lemon confit, white flowers, spice and a touch of pastry flesh out as this racy, succulent Champagne opens in the glass. The low dosage of 4 grams per liter is not especially evident as the wine has more than enough richness to keep things in balance. Delicate and vinous, with lovely inner sweetness, the 2004 is simply impeccable. Disgorged: February, 2017.

The 2004 Extra Brut Millésime Collection is a fabulous example of the year. Wonderfully fresh, nuanced and bright, the 2004 bristles with all of the energy that makes wines from this vintage so alluring. Lemon confit, spice and hazelnut overtones show just the first signs of the complexity that develops in bottle. Readers who can find the 2004 should not hesitate, as it is terrific. Disgorged: 2018. The 2004 is sold as part of a set that includes the 2000 and 2002.

Gentle honeysuckle across lemon biscuits, grilled almond, honey and dried flowers. The palate has striking mineral presence, and it extremely smooth with saline edge. Crisp and sizzling through the finish. Terrific hold. Drink now.

Produced only in the best years from the oldest (50+ years) vines. Always different, but this one is 71% Chardonnay and 29% Pinot Noir. All picked separately and the best 15 hl of the first press. Straight into barrels. Closed with cork. ‘I taste them all and rejected 24 out of 600.’ Dosage 2 g/l. Disgorged January 2013. ‘Oak just adds nervosité’, and there is lots of tension here. Nervy – one of the nerviest wines here. (JR)
