(from the same estate that supplies the Damodes; located just below the gravelly Damodes on more clay-based soil, these vines are also older): Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoke and musky soil tones accented by a suggestion of black pepper. Quite ripe and even a bit chocolatey in the mouth, but intensely flavored and classically dry. Showing less early personality than the Damodes but this comes across as denser.

Mid garnet. Fairly lightweight on the nose. Broad and sweet on the palate. Lots of charm and appeal but perhaps not quite the drive and minerality of some. Finish is a little gruff at the moment but it’s very persistent. (JR)
The inaugural 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras (from vines just below the Damodes, allowing it to be picked at the same time) has a lively, more “Pinot” bouquet than the La Damode, with vivacious red cherry and crushed strawberry scents, taut and focused. The palate is crisp and taut with finer tannins and it comes equipped with lip-smacking salinity on the finish. Excellent.
