FINE+RARE, Oct 2020

Just released and not yet rated officially by the critics, the 2013 is another classic example of Pol Roger’s House style. As ever, Pinot Noir dominates the blend – adding structure and depth of fruit, while 40% Chardonnay lends finesse and elegance. The fruit is exclusively from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, the wine aged for seven years in bottle. Disgorged in April this year, the wine is tightly coiled – relaxing with air to offer citrus, white blossom and more honeyed notes. A bright line of acidity combines with the House’s typically broad texture to create another fine vintage Pol. Crack into a case from 2025 and savour it over a decade or more. The 2013 Pol Roger is brimming with personality. The nose offers a medley of citrus fruit with lemon curd, mandarin and orange peel, plus chalk, marzipan and acacia blossom. With air, smoke and honeyed toast emerge. It's very smart and indulgent, but young and vibrant. The palate is extremely precise, with distinct notes of orange marmalade and fresh green apple, matched by excellent acidity. It has super power and length, but there's a tensile delicacy. It's testament to the vintage that Pol Roger is declaring a 2013 Winston Churchill. Although drinking splendidly now, this classic Pol will reward several years of cellaring, opening up further to unleash the richness and complexity that is lying in wait.

Quite a rich nose with come-on appeal – though probably not to a grower-champagne devotee! Firm cooking-apple flavour and apple-skin texture on the palate. Much lighter and more frivolous than the 2012. Just a little light, especially on the finish. (JR)
