Tasting Notes
Marcel Lapierre was one of the original proponents of biodynamics and low intervention winemaking in Beaujolais in the early '80s. The man who James Suckling calls “one of the masters in Beaujolais” and Josh Raynolds refers to as “a legend in the region” passed away in 2010, but his family and in particular his son have been carrying on his legacy faithfully. Faithfully, but not to a fault, natural wine sceptics will be pleased to hear. As Neal Martin has expressed, Domaine Lapierre is one of the more "forward-thinking biodynamic producers refreshingly not hidebound by dogma". When needed, minimal doses of SO2 will be used - but the principle that the terroir and good fruit, with sound but minimal interventions in the vineyard and cellar, should do most of the speaking for a wine holds true. It is for good reason that this is one of the few Morgons that we offer in every successful vintage, and the 2019 certainly fits the bill. With superb fruit purity, concentration and freshness, this has all the hallmarks of a great Morgon and most of all, it is a pleasure to drink. This wine often sells out before any scores are released and we are pleased to enthusiastically recommend the 2019 vintage today. A ruby-red colour, nose of crushed red berries, hints of violets and wild garrigues herbs, underlined by a riper profile on the palate. Displaying a multi-layered, concentrated array of darker fruits and a velvety mouth-feel, the tannins are very delicate providing instant drinking pleasure. This is not forced or over-extracted, just a sense of harmony, purity and freshness. The acidity and energy kick in on the mid-palate to balance the power of this wine’s penetrating finish. It is a perfect example of the kind of wine that you immediately need a second glass of!
