Transparent ruby. Much less expressive and intense than some other vintages. Lots of acidity and fine tannins in evidence. This wine seems rather stuck in time – fossilised even – and the whole impression is a tad tart. (JR)

The 2004 Barolo Brunate is approaching an early plateau of maturity. Deep and pliant on the palate, the 2004 possesses striking depth, fabulous balance and sense of resonance that is hugely appealing. Dried rose petal, sage, mint and crushed raspberries meld into the soft, succulent finish. This is a lovely showing.

La Morra, barrique 24 months. Plenty of oak spice and liquorice over sweet, very ripe dark red fruit. Fruit and tannins well balanced though the tannins are very firm right now. Lively and yet sturdy. (JH)

The 2004 Barolo Brunate is textbook Barolo from one of Piedmont's most historic sites. Gorgeous, open aromatics lead to a perfumed core of dark cherries, spices, menthol and eucalyptus. This vibrant, gorgeous Barolo needs bottle age to come together, but it is a majestic wine in the making. Readers looking for an under the radar gem need look no further than Marco Marengo's sublime 2004 Barolo Brunate.
