Glistening ruby. Spice- and earth-tinged red and blue fruits on the nose, along with a floral nuance that builds with air. Nicely concentrated and chewy in texture, offering bitter cherry, black raspberry and cracked pepper flavors that take a sweeter turn on the back half. Dusty tannins come in slowly and add grip to a long, energetic finish that emphatically repeats the spicy note.

The Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine always seems to be a winner and the 2017 is no exception. With a big, meaty, peppery nose that has ample cedary spice and sweet red and black fruits, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, ripe tannins, and terrific balance. It's rock solid and will shine of upwards of a decade. The blend is 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah, aged two years in concrete and stainless steel.

Still tannic and chewy, I continue to hold out hope for the positive evolution of the 2017 Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine. Time will tell if the tannins soften before the bold notes of cola, blackberry and earth fade. Right now, this medium to full-bodied blend of 70% Grenache and 15% each Mourvèdre and Syrah is tough sledding.

70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Understated, compact nose with black cherry and furry, fine tannins. Glossy fruit on the palate, with some black-olive savoury character to finish. (RH)
