Tasting notes
Primarily Carignan planted in 1909, the 2017 Minervois Cazelles Les Carretals is easily one of my favorite examples of this sometimes maligned (even by me) variety. Briary red raspberries lead the way in this medium to full-bodied wine, which aged entirely in pièces de Bourgogne. Hints of vanilla and baking spices help tame the wiry green tendrils that stick out of the fruit, bringing them back into harmonious balance on the silky-textured finish.

About the producer

Anne Gros is better known for her estate in Vosne-Romanée, as is her partner Jean-Paul Tollot for his family’s Domaine Tollot-Beaut in Chorey-lès-Beaune. Beyond Burgundy, however, the duo makes some impressive wine in Cazelles in the Minervois, working with higher-altitude vineyards.
