Score 90/100 · Drink 2017-2022, Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2017

The 2014 Minervois La Ciaude from Anne Gros is an old vine mix of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache, from the clay and limestone soils around the estate, that was completely destemmed and brought up mostly in barrel, with 20% in tank. It’s terrific and has an elegant, silky style in its raspberry, black cherry, sappy herb/garrigue and floral aromatics. Medium-bodied and lightly textured on the palate, with juicy acidity, drink this delicious charmer over the coming 4-5 years. I followed this bottle for two days and it was even better on the second day, so don’t be afraid to give it some air.

The 2014 Minervois la Ciaude is an old vine mix of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache, from the clay and limestone soils around the estate, that was completely destemmed and brought up mostly in barrel, with 20% in tank. Like all of Anne’s wines, it has terrific purity of fruit and an overriding sense of elegance to go with lots of blackberry, crushed rock, earth and wet stone-like minerality. It has fine tannin on the finish, yet is far from unapproachable today. Still, give the bottle a year or two in the cellar and it should hold through 2024.

Jean-Paul Tollot & Anne Gros

Anne Gros is better known for her estate in Vosne-Romanée, as is her partner Jean-Paul Tollot for his family’s Domaine Tollot-Beaut in Chorey-lès-Beaune. Beyond Burgundy, however, the duo makes some impressive wine in Cazelles in the Minervois, working with higher-altitude vineyards.
