Looks pale and quite evolved. Really rather thrilling on the nose. Evolution and some tension and no ersatz sweetness. Not great depth or alcohol but very convincing terroir wine. Delicacy. And fine tannins. Clean, lingering finish. Only just ready to drink. (JR)

The 2008 Corton-Clos du Roi is a bit massive and closed in on itself. It is clearly holding back considerable potential at this stage. With time in the glass, the fruit gradually begins to emerge. The Clos du Roi looks to be one of the more sumptuous 2008s, once the tannins soften a touch. There is so much energy and sheer vitality here. This is a terrific wine from Etienne de Montille. Good medium deep red. Sexy, ripe aromas of dark cherry, flowers, leather, underbrush and Near Eastern spices. Rich, saline, soil-driven raspberry, spice and leather flavors show terrific concentration allied to excellent lift and energy, saturating the entire palate with flavor. Perhaps most impressive today on the very long, rising, energetic finish, which leaves the mouth coated with a fine dusting of tannins and mineral dust.
