The 2017 Corton Le Clos du Roi Grand Cru is quite reduced on the nose, noticeably bretty compared to its peers and lacking some freshness as a result. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit and a touch of spice. Chewy toward the finish, with moderate length. Does not distinguish itself from the pack. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru contains 45% whole bunch fruit. It has a straitlaced, rather conservative bouquet that refuses to let its hair down. The palate is actually much more promising on the nose, muted at first but gaining more confidence toward the second half, and the finish exhibits commendable precision and mineralité , more Côte de Nuits than Côte de Beaune in style thanks to the silky texture. I suspect the aromatics will awaken once in bottle.

Very firm reduction is all that is discernible at present. As one would expect there is better size, weight and power to the attractively textured and muscular flavors that are shaped by dense but fine tannins, all wrapped in an intensely mineral-driven finish that offers just a bit more depth and persistence. This well-made effort is firm but not really imposingly structured and will likely drink reasonably well after only 5 to 7 years.
