FINE+RARE, May 2019

2012 is particularly special for Pinot Noir and Philipponnat’s Blanc de Noirs cuvée shows the power and precision of the grape in this vintage. Pinot Noir suffered drastically reduced yields in 2012, but subsequently enjoyed massively heightened concentration. This played beautifully into the hands of Philipponnat. Tasting at Philipponnat’s cellars in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the 2012 Blanc de Noirs stood out in a fantastic line up as a wine of brilliant opulence and exuberance, a rich hazelnut and praline nose that became more floral with time in glass, and with amazing energy, drive and electric freshness. This is a Champagne with real "wow" factor. In true Philipponnat style, the wine is both opulent but brilliantly poised. The energy runs right through the palate, beautifully balanced by a fine, silky texture. It’s fabulous. A golden impression of ripe apricots and bergamot, orange peel, honey, hazelnuts, and praline on the nose. The palate is powerful and expressive, with great energy, drive and dynamism. A dazzling freshness on the finish leaves an impression of light-footed elegance, despite the rich and opulent aromas and flavours persisting impressively. It is a real “wow” wine from Philipponnat in 2012.

The 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs was disgorged in September 2018 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage. Offering up notes of fresh peach, honeycomb, mint and warm bread, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and textural, with lively acids, excellent concentration and a chalky finish. It's showing very well.

The 2012 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs is a gorgeous mid-tier Champagne that shows just how compelling this vintage is. Bright and finely cut, the Blanc de Noirs has so much to offer. Lifted aromatics and nuanced fruit meld together in an impeccably balanced Champagne that bristles with energy. For this cuvée, Philipponnat blends fruit from sites with both south and north-facing exposures for maximum complexity. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2018.
