The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru has quite an austere bouquet, backward and sultry at first, then hints of lemon zest, Conference pear and light earthy aromas emerging with time. The fresh, saline palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Initially, it misses a little finesse and precision toward the lemongrass-tinged finish, but returning after 10 minutes, I find a degree of elegance and harmony that wins me over. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The lovely 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie reveals aromas of crisp green pear, honeycomb, fresh pastry and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny but fine-boned palate that's elegant and precise. As I wrote last year, it combines some of the qualities of Chenevottes and Vergers.
Tank sample. Not as immediately open as the Chenevottes but you can sense the richness. Almost a honeyed edge to the citrus fruit. Just a hint of creamy spice. Much more mealy and creamy on the palate, broad and mouth-filling, with power and yet freshness. A big wine with fine bones and succulent mouth-watering finish. (JH)
