Score 93/100 · Drink 2016-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is a bit of SO2 on the nose of Jacques Carillon’s Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011: struck-match aromas that obstruct the fruit intensity. The palate is ripe and slightly viscous with orange cordial and mango coming through on the clean but uncomplicated finish. Initially this seems a little facile, but wait a few moments, for with aeration it develops more and more tension and hidden minerality, while that sulfur blows off. Then, and only then, you end up appreciating the quality of this mischievous grand cru.

Carillon's 2011 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru is total silk on the palate. Subtle, layered and exceptionally polished, the 2011 is all about texture. Exotic white truffle, mint, smoke and Chamomile notes are just starting to develop in the glass, but the 2011 has a long time to go before being ready. Riesling-inflected petrol notes add nuance on the finish. This is a seriously beautiful wine from Jacques Carillon.
