Jean-Marc Burgaud is quietly making the best wines in Morgon, with substantial holdings in the excellent Côte du Py. His winemaking is fiercely traditional; whole bunches undergo semi-carbonic maceration for 12 to 14 days in concrete tank before ageing in concrete tank for nine months. Mid crimson. Quite a ‘serious’ nose. Juicy fruit with just a nod to excessive fruitiness. Marked acidity but this is still too chewy for current drinking. (JR)

Glistening purple. Heady red/blue fruit, violet, incense and smoky mineral aromas are complemented by hints of succulent herbs and exotic spices. Appealingly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that show sharp delineation and mineral lift. Velvety tannins give shape to the mineral-tinged finish, which strongly echoes the blue fruit and spice notes.

The 2017 Morgon Cote du Py is also smoking good, with a similar black and blue-fruited style in its ripe, roasted herbs, wood smoke, licorice, and meaty aromas and flavors. These carry over to the palate where the wine is medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, with some serious oomph and richness that’s balanced nicely by the wine’s purity and elegance. I like it today, yet it has good acidity and ample tannins, and is going to keep for over a decade.

Explosively fragrant, aromatic nose with very impressive aromas of spiced cassis and red cherries, as well as raspberries. The palate has a very plush, juicy and powerful, focused finish. So balanced and long. Drink or hold.
