The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Saintes Vierges is slightly darker in color and checks in as 90% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre and the balance Counoise, all from the sandy soils of the Les Saintes Vierges lieu-dit, that was destemmed and aged in foudre. Strawberries, plums, mint, and incense notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, pretty 2015 that has good acidity. Given its balance and purity, it’s going to drink nicely for 10-15 years.

The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Saintes Vierges is the most flattering of Santa Duc's current releases, offering lushness and generosity on the palate, notes of cherries and licorice, creamy-supple tannins and a mouthwatering finish. It's a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Counoise.

(aged in foudres for 18 months) Dark ruby. Ripe, spice-accented blackberry, cherry and succulent herbs on the expansive nose. Intense red and dark berry preserve and spicecake flavors are lifted and sharpened by smoky minerality and pick up a peppery quality with aeration. Concentrated as well as energetic, finishing with impressive persistence, supple tannins and lingering notes of candied lavender and white pepper.

Les Saintes Vierges. 90% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, 1% Counoise. Destemmed and fermented at 25 °C in concrete tanks. Aged for 18 months in foudres. pH 3.71, TA 3.59 g/l. Tasted blind. Dark blackish crimson. Sinewy nose and massive ripeness. Some briary chew on the end, as though the wine still had stalks in. (JR)
