(13% natural alcohol; no frost here; a fairly full crop from a 1927 planting; vinified with a small percentage of whole clusters): Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. A touch of reduction to the aromas of dark raspberry, fresh black cherry, flinty minerals and spices. At once creamy and fresh, boasting lovely inner-mouth lift to its flavors of cherry and minerals. There's a citrussy quality here that I find exhilarating. The long, spicy finish stimulates the salivary glands. These south-facing vines ripen quickly, noted Tremblay, so it's a challenge to pick early to preserve freshness and energy. This wine will merit a score at the high end of my range if it gains in depth during its final months of élevage .

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts, which is matured in 50% new oak with around 30% stem addition, has a deep purple color. The bouquet is very floral and extremely detailed with crushed violet and rose petal scents embroidered into the blackcurrant and wild strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin. This certainly leans toward the dark side of the fruit spectrum—blackcurrant, boysenberry and touches of white pepper and garrigues toward the structured and almost Malconsorts-like finish. This will really benefit from five or six years in bottle, but there is good potential here.

The first grapes to be picked. 90-year-old vines. Not close to the parcels she will inherit in 2021. Barrel sample. Dark crimson. Very juicy and polished. Fresher than the Vosne Vieilles Vignes and the Bourgogne. Firm finish. Very smooth and racy. Great undertow. Real Beaux Monts class. Not as heavy and earthbound as the Bourgogne and Vosne Vieilles Vignes 2016s from this address. (JR)
