Fruit from Porseleinberg. The grapes are partially destemmed and fermented spontaneously in tulip-shaped concrete tanks with a soft délestage 2–3 times a day. Once cuvaison was completed, the wine was moved to large 2,500-litre foudres and 600-litre demi-muids for 18 months of ageing. Natural cork. Tasted blind. Racy, polished, long. A wine with substance. Impossible to dislike, surely? Silky texture but with real depth, even if there is a bit of alcohol on the end. Long. (JR)

The 2015 Syrah has a more brooding bouquet than the Solms Delta Swartland Syrah, yet it is just as complex with gamey black fruit, notes of curry leaf and light white pepper aromas. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannins. Quite sapid, peppery in style with a cohesive and persistent finish. Again, this is aging at a gradual pace and will repay further bottle age if you desire. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 10-Year-On horizontal in London.

The 2015 Syrah (100% Syrah) comes from the Porseleinberg and Goldmine Vineyards and is partially destemmed and aged 18 months in 500- and 600-liter barrels. It offers a beautiful bouquet of blueberries, violets, crushed rocks and pepper to go with a medium to full-bodied, voluptuous, yet elegant style on the palate. With sweet tannin, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great finish, it’s another sensational Syrah from winemaker Marc Kent. It’s certainly not far behind the more expensive Porseleinberg Syrah, has incredible character, and will drink nicely for at least a decade.

From Porseleinberg and another plot. Nicely integrated and fresh. Real life and zest. Not cheap though! Sophisticated. 21st-century wine with refreshment and a future. (JR)
