The 2009 Pierre-Henri Morel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan is 100% Grenache (all destemmed and aged in demi-muid) that sees a very traditional elevage, with 12 months in concrete tank. Showing a superb bouquet (which is common from this lieu-dit) of sweet kirsch, blackberry, licorice, honey water, and mint/underbrush like qualities, the wine boasts an outstanding palate and mouth-feel with superb balance, a concentrated, rich texture, and fine tannin on the finish. More feminine and elegant than powerful, this delicious, very drinkable Châteauneuf-du-Pape should drink nicely for 8-10 years.

Related to Chapoutier in some way. Deep blackish crimson. Lively appetising nose, very rich and sinewy. Seems very Syrah? Lovely balance and texture – though very far from typical sweet Grenache.

Pierre-Henri Morel, who works with Michel Chapoutier, has his own estate in the southern Rhone, and these wines all emerge from his holdings and/or purchases. Obviously, the 2008s have to take a backseat to the 2009 bottlings, but I thought the wines fared well for such a tough vintage.
