Score 93/100 · Drink 2018-2025, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2018

The 2015 vintage is an important one for Barbera. Elio Grasso's 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Martina is a solid and powerful wine that embraces the opulence and richness that distinguishes this singular grape variety. Barbera vines are planted at the edges of the Nebbiolo crus, and most of these plants were first put there by Gianluca's dad or his grandfather. The vines range in age from 45 to 70 years old. Planting philosophies tend to be passed down through the generations, from father to son, in these parts. The wine sees up to 25 days of maceration with submerged caps to build the wine's color and flavor profile. The finished wine then goes into oak barrel for 18 months. This beautiful vintage presents layers of Morello cherry, smoked meat and crushed mineral.

Mid crimson. Full cherry compote nose with hints of dried fruit. The palate is more complex than the nose with great depth of fruit. Lots of racy acidity cutting through plush fruit. Not cheap, but worth the money. (WS)
