Score 88/100 · Drink 2028-2040, Neal Martin, Apr 2026

The 2016 Giscours has a more open and slightly riper bouquet, black cherries and blueberry fruit, dried rose petals and just a bit of nail varnish. Well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very blackcurranty in style and, as such, it just misses a bit of bandwidth and complexity on the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Giscours is built around 81% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a wonderful bouquet with pure blackberry, crushed violet and mineral scents, with exquisite delineation and poise. The palate is framed by fine tannins and a perfect line of acidity. Slightly grainy in texture, it boasts gentle grip, yet there is real intensity and focus here. The 2016 is only just beginning to open and should be cellared for several years.

Austere on the opening beats, with smoked earth and tight liqourice lacing through the tannins, suggesting this remains closed at almost 8 years old, with the structure and heft to carry it over the long term. Clear ripeness of fruit underneath, with cassis, black cherry and grilled spice character of a fully-ripe vintage. Give it time in the glass for the generosity to come through, this has persistency and confidence. Trace of heat, but great quality from the team at Giscours, headed up by Alexander van Beek.

Deep, shaded crimson. Real complexity on the nose. Then a chunky, solid, dry finish. There’s a lot packed into this but it’s not quite ready. There’s just a hint of sourness on the end. Still pretty chewy. (JR)
