Checking the evolution of the 2013 Macán Clásico next to the 2012 and 2014 vintages was a fascinating exercise. 2013 is a cooler vintage with slightly lower alcohol and more freshness, a challenging shorter vintage. There is less concentration than in 2012 or 2014. It's very drinkable and pleasant, medium-bodied, ready and for the short and medium term. 39,500 bottles, 1,071 magnums and some larger formats were bottled in May 2015.

Opaque ruby. Intense red and dark berry scents, along with suggestions of toasty oak, cigar box and vanilla. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering juicy cherry and blackberry flavors that open up slowly on the back half. Still a bit youthfully compact, but there's good energy here. Closes smoky, youthfully tannic and long, with lingering mocha and cherry pie notes.
70% new oak, 30% used. 80% French, 20% US. Deep cherry red. Spicy and richly fruited – the sweetness of blueberry and blackberry, and some vanilla sweetness, but there is s still a rather nice dusty, savoury quality. The fruit seems to smell sweeter – redder – with air. Much more savoury on the palate. There’s plenty of fruit but there’s also a dry leathery quality and more elegance than I expected. Creamy texture on the mid palate and then chewy tannins on the finish. (JH)
