The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Blanc, more than 85% of which hails from Aligoté vines planted in 1911, opens in the glass with notes of citrus zest, vanilla pod, pastry cream and hazelnuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and textural, with tense acids and a grippy, almost phenolic finish.

(bottled in March of 2016): Pale yellow. At once exotic and fresh on the nose and palate, showing more yellow fruits and honey than minerals. Very rich, plush wine with enough acidity to maintain its shape (just over four grams per liter, according to Rose-Marie Ponsot, who added that the 2016 version has 4.5 grams). Plenty in reserve here: I never would have guessed Aligoté owing to the wine's richness. This one won't need as much cellaring as the '16.

About the producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
