The 2015 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru always needed a little bottle age in order to show what it is capable of, as proven here. Initially it comes across as quite reserved and mineral-driven, displaying darker fruit than the 2016, but turning more sensual and expressive with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tertiary opening and a grainy texture. Not quite as finessed as the 2016 but already demonstrating promising persistence on the finish. Excellent, but it needs time.

The 2015 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has precocious bouquet of ample red cherry and kirsch aromas, nicely defined if unashamedly showy. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin, moderate acidity and gentle grip on the lightly spiced if slightly blunt finish. At the moment, the Premier Crus seem to offer more, but give this two or three years in bottle to achieve full flight. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 10 closure)

Good bright, dark red. Explosive nose combines raspberry, plum, mocha, tobacco, earth and smoky underbrush. Wonderfully silky and sweet but with surprising verve and tension to its red berry, spice and salty mineral flavors. This compellingly rich, deep wine finishes with fully ripe, smooth tannins, outstanding length and terrific spicy lift. I underestimated this wine in late 2016; it now displays exceptional class for Mazoyères--and all the elements to make a great bottle.
