The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a backward, surly and unresponsive bouquet that, despite rigorous swirling, just refuses to give much. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite solid tannic structure. This is a Premier Cru with impressive backbone but contented to be charmless in its youth. I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole right now. Worryingly, it does seem to deteriorate in the glass - hence my parsimonious score. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, the 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées also put in a superb performance, unfurling in the glass with an attractive bouquet of ripe red berries, incense and candied peel, framed by a touch of light reduction that segues into sapid bass notes of smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and multidimensional, with supple tannins, a dramatic core of fruit and succulent underlying acids. This is a very promising Brûlées from Domaine d'Eugénie.
(60% new oak): Healthy dark red. A musky touch of reduction to the aromas of black raspberry, smoke and minerals. Densely packed, chewy and concentrated, conveying an impression of depth to its flavors of dark berries, spices and saline minerality. But very reduced and hard to judge today, displaying limited sweetness in the early going. The tannins are dusty and broad. This wine has tightened up in Domaine d'Eugenie's cold cellar, but it's still clearly a large-scaled premier cru.
