Smoky and minerally. Very youthful, even slightly reductive (struck-match aromas) at the moment, but very pure, dry and with great acidity. It has weight but is so fresh that it you hardly notice it. Archetypal. (JH)

If you grab a wine, uncorked, right off the bottling line, is that still a barrel sample? I shall treat the 2004 Riesling Smaragd Steinertal as such, making allowances for the awkwardness of the occasion. Lime, tangerine and szechuan pepper in the nose lead to a palate less full-bodied than is usual with this offering, but juicy, richly ripe in it citrus and pit fruit character as well as persistently spicy-hot. The intense finish combines a slightly medicinal herbal essence character with citrus oil, pepper, wet stones, and the pits of the pit fruits for a striking if austere and slightly bitter finish.
