Score 95+/100 · Drink 2020-2037, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2017

The 2012 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is bright, pulsating with energy and finely chiseled to the core, but today it is the wine's creaminess and center of fruit that come through most. There is considerable fruit density in the glass, but the 2012 is also dense and closed in on itself. Readers will have to be patient; this is a 2012 that demands cellaring.

The 2012 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is one of the most beautiful, precise wines of the vintage. Finely cut and chiseled, the Gavarini exudes energy and tension, both signatures of this high-altitude, Monforte site. Crushed flowers, dark red berries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the signatures. So many 2012s are open-knit, but Grasso's Gavarini is going to need at least several years in barrel. If anything, the 2012 is a bit austere, but I say that in the best sense of the word. Exotic, alluring and totally stunning, the 2012 is a real knock-out.

A beautiful bouquet characterized by feminine floral tones and elegant accents of smoke, ash and crushed mineral distinguish this classic wine. The 2012 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a balanced and harmonious effort that makes you forget about the warm growing conditions in this vintage. The fruit ripeness and overall precision of the wine are impeccable. There's a touch of crunchy firmness in terms of tannins and the acidity adds brightness and energy. This wine should reach its drinking window in about ten years.
