Nose of red fruit, smoked beef, kirsch and wild herbs. Nice richness and weight in the mouth with concentrated red currant, cherry, cassis, tobacco and smoke. Ripe acidity and lots of energy!Dec 2015

(Benoît Stehly used 40% new oak for all of his grand crus in both 2014 and 2015): Palish red. Tight, rather high-pitched aromas of red berries, spices and underbrush. Juicy on the palate but showing little easy sweetness in the early going; in a classic savory style, and much tighter than the Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes. (The estate has two plots, one in Maison Brûlée and the other on the northern end of this grand cru.) A rather linear, vertical style but long on the aftertaste, showing a fresh, firm spice character. Stehly loves Clos Saint-Denis; he considers Bonnes-Mares a bit too soft and massive by comparison.

Light crimson. A little occluded, sweet hard candy (sucky sweet) on the nose. Big and sweet but not very subtle at the moment. Edgy for now. It will presumably come right in the end with all that fruit tucked in. (JR)
