The 2014 Lirac Cuvee de La Reine des Bois is an incredible effort that transcends the vintage and is easily the wine of the vintage from Lirac. Possessing fabulous purity and elegance, with medium to full-bodied richness, classic notes of crème de cassis, caramelized meats, violets and licorice, sweet tannin and a great finish, I doubt it will be the longest lived example of this cuvée, but man, hats off to the team for this killer wine in a difficult vintage!

Bright violet. Potent smoke- and earth-accented aromas of ripe dark berries and floral pastilles, lent vivacity by a vibrant mineral element. Sappy and palate-staining, offering juicy boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors given spine and lift by tangy acidity. Clings with very good tenacity on the youthfully tannic finish, which echoes the blue fruit and smoke notes.

35% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre. Deep crimson. Ripe cherry a bit like cherry chocolate but not that sweet. Firm and dry and firmly tannic on the palate. More savoury than La Dame Rousse and richer in the middle to balance out the tannins. Chewy and honest. Big wine that cries out for food. (JH)

Tank sample. Particularly dark crimson. Intense nose with real energy followed by a voluptuous nose. Pretty impressive! Very fine tannins after some notably ripe fruit. Exceptionally successful. (JR)
