At age nine, the 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie is beginning to drink very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh hazelnut, white flowers and orange oil that exhibit none of the exoticism that can mark out this vintage. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegant, it's layered and seamless, with bright acids and fine length on the precise finish. Readers who purchased this when Moreau's wines were still very affordable can reflect with satisfaction on their foresight.

(bottled in March): Bright, light yellow. More minerally on the nose than the village offering, displaying scents of yellow fruits, spices, mint, menthol and caraway seed. Fine-grained and energetic, conveying an impression of density without weight thanks to its ripe acidity and underlying minerality. The spice and honey flavors carry well on the lively back end.
Not as expressive (yet) as the village Chassagne and a touch more mineral. That restraint on the nose does not prepare you for the zesty intensity on the palate. This is classic white burgundy, no fads or tricks. Fabulous fruit – picked, it seems, at the peak of ripeness and freshness. (JH)
From three parcels aged 24-, 39- and 50+-years-old, the 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru la Maltroie has an expressive and effervescent floral bouquet: citrus fruit, yellow flowers, Clementine and a hint of almond. The palate is crisp on the entry with superb acidity that slices through the intense marmalade-tinged fruit. This has real swagger and wonderful mineral tones toward the finish that fans out.
