Released six years after the harvest, the Luciano Sandrone 2014 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore Sibi et Pauci is a special surprise. This wine sits at that perfect intersection between primary and tertiary intensity with bold blackberry and wild berry aromas contrasted against tar, licorice and camphor ash. It's at that ideal spot along the Nebbiolo timeline, and if you have a bottle, I enthusiastically recommend that you pop the cork tonight with a special meal. I'm thinking veal cooked with a wild porcini mushroom sauce.

Luciano Sandrone's 2014 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is a very pretty, nuanced wine. Bright floral notes and red-toned fruit give the 2014 striking freshness as well as nuance. The 2014 is a bit slender, as most wines are in this year, and yet it has terrific energy and tons of class. I would give it a few years in bottle. The Sandrone Valmaggiore has a brilliant track record of aging; I suspect that will be the case here as well.

Sibi et Paucis is a range of estate wines that receive bottle ageing (10 years for the Barolos and 6 years for the Nebbiolo), after which, and in very limited quantities, they are re-released onto the market. Lustrous mid ruby. Red fruit with a touch of hot iron and not without concentration. Succulent and refreshing with gripping tannins. Plain delicious and a real feat considering the very cold and rainy vintage. (WS)

The 2014 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is quite pretty. Sweet floral aromatics meld into tobacco, dried cherry, licorice, mint and pine in a finely-knit, sensual wine that captures the essence of this well-known Roero site. Readers who enjoy wines with aromatic development may want to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years. Today, the natural brightness of the vintage and the primary fruit of Nebbiolo are very much front and center.
