Blackish crimson – quite different from most Châteauneufs. Bit dusty on the nose – strange oak? Very odd and metallic… Just sweet – needs a core of real fruit – seems a bit fake and dusty. (JR)

Saturated ruby-red. Multifaceted nose features blackberry, violet, leather, tree bark, black pepper and lead pencil, plus a faint green note. Dense and thick, but nicely brightened by sound acidity. Quite intensely flavored. Very long on the finish, with pepper, cinnamon and tree bark notes and slightly dry-edged tannins. The mourvedre tannins were atypically mellow in '98, says LeBrun, yet this very young wine showed a distinct hardness and was tough to assess in early May.
