The benchmark vineyard for Riesling in the Wachau. Paragneiss with strong influence of amphibolite, ie metamorphosed magna. Hornblend. Very close to the Danube and very steep. 13 ha vineyard. Oily mineral spice but some ripe pear fruit too. Gorgeously intense spicy citrus. After the Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Smaragd just tasted, the acidity seems very high. Powerful, intense and driving to a long finish. Great citrus purity but still has some mineral complexity. (JH)

Luscious peach and Mirabelle are significantly marked by their pits as well as by smoky black tea and forest floor notes for a low-toned, dark impression. Sappy and expansive, palpably rich in extract and fundamentally firm, this finishes with piquant concentration and formidable length, a hint of blond tobacco adding welcome, saliva-drawing savor.

This type of Prager's 2013 Riesling Smaragd Klaus is allied to the Achleiten, although cooler, spicier and purer, less fruit-driven. Rich, juicy and piquant on the palate, this full-bodied and well-concentrated wine reveals a great elegance and complexity as well as finesse and drinkability. An impressive, very mineral wine with great aging potential.

RS 2.9 g/l. Racy nose but admirably deep-flavoured. Very rich as well as vibrant. Really reverberant. (JR)
