(14.8% alcohol; 20% from Swartland and the rest from Wellington; fermented with wild yeasts and aged for 26 months in old barriques ; entirely destemmed): Bright ruby-red. Deep aromas of blueberry, violet, chocolate, licorice pastille and black pepper. A pure, vinous midweight, with a very smooth texture and a sweet oak component that contributes to its appeal. Finishes with serious building, tongue-coating tannins.

20% of the fruit came from Porseleinberg in Swartland and about 80% from the original source in Wellington. 27 months in old barriques. Warmish nose. Quite sweet but definitely Syrah rather than Shiraz on the nose. Some pepperiness and real quality with good freshness on the finish. Hint of chocolate. Mellow and full bodied although it finished a little suddenly. (JR)
