Cool. No MLF or lees contact prior to 1984. Then from 1984 to 2006 they went very burgundian: stirring, indigenous yeasts. Since 2006, as a result of a big vertical tasting where it became quite clear that the best vintages spoke for themselves, they have backed right off on the winemaking intervention and don’t do any stirring, although the wine is aged on lees and they still do MLF. 50-100% new oak, for 9-18 months in barrel. Fine and fresh and very confident. Graceful. Open. (JR)

Flaunting a gorgeous nose of ripe apricots, warm pineapples and green mango, with touches of cashew pieces, cedar, beeswax and toast, the medium-bodied 2012 Chardonnay delivers outstanding concentration of stone fruit and nutty/toasty flavor layers on the palate along with a racy line of acidity and a long finish that has a lovely, spicy character. Drink it now to 2019+. Importer: Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. (206) 923-1376

Light yellow. Lemon zest, poached pear and honeysuckle on the intensely perfumed nose. Juicy citrus, pit and orchard fruit flavors are firmed by dusty minerality, which adds refreshing lift and incisive cut. Dry, stony and pure, showing a suave blend of power and vivacity and excellent finishing clarity.

Wilyabrup fruit. Very ripe, intense citrus fruit aroma, some grapefruit pith and orange peel and melon but nothing tropical here, just concentrated. Extreme purity of fruit so that the oak is barely noticeable except in the fullness in the mouth and just the merest a hint of toast. Refined even with all the richness and marked freshness, almost a sour/salty freshness on the finish. Very good. Probably has an even longer life than I am suggesting. (JH)
