The 2003 Haut-Condissas is fairly typical for the growing season: richer than the 2001 and 2002 though without the same level of delineation with black cherries, eau-de-vie and a discrete delicatessen scent. It is not unpleasant but it lacks a touch of style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. This feels ripe and forward, with burnt toast infusing the mid-palate that leads to a slightly attenuated finish. Not bad, but I prefer other vintages from this era. Tasted at the Haut-Condissas vertical at the property.

Once again, the relationship between quality and value is well-displayed in this Medoc, which exhibits lots of cedarwood, forest floor, black currant and spice box characteristics in a medium- to full-bodied, opulent, fully mature style. Consume this delicious, fresh, loaded 2003 over the next 4-5 years.

A special cuvée of Rollan de By. Dense crimson. Rather odd nose and then acidity insists. Both acid and alcohol on the finish – most unusual. Then furry tannins on the back palate. Not for me. (Average group score: 14.4) (JR)

(a special cuvee from Chateau Rolland de By) Full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet, bitter chocolate and oak spices. Rich, round and sweet, with sexy dark berry, chocolate and toasty oak flavors. Fairly full wine for its simple Medoc appellation, offering very good mouth coverage. Finishes with substantial sweet tannins and notes of toast and spice. An excellent showing.
