The 1996 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees has a tertiary, mushroom-tinged bouquet with touches of violet petals and truffle developing in the glass. The palate is feminine, nicely focused with tart red cherries and just a hint of white pepper. Elegant right to the finish, though perhaps missing the persistency of other vintages, this is drinking well now, not tomorrow. Tasted November 2013.

Good medium red. Wonderfully fresh nose offers raspberry, gunflint, smoked meat, licorice, roasted herbs, mocha and underbrush, further complicated by balsamic nuances. At once creamy and firm, with terrific acidity framing its primary berry and underbrush flavors. Wonderfully detailed for 16-year-old Burgundy but not yet really giving. Finishes long, relying as much on its acids as on its tannins for structure. This very backward wine, which was especially tough to assess in the early years, is probably just beginning to open up.
