The 2000 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées from Michel Gros takes a little time to find its composure in the glass, but eventually offers crisp, leafy red berry fruit, autumnal in style, hints of hickory emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, gentle on the entry and harmonious but manifesting more vigour and depth towards the finish. It might not be the most complex or profound Aux Brûlées you will ever meet, but you cannot deny that it has aged with style and continues to offer plenty of drinking pleasure. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

Whereas the Clos des Réas is dominated by its new oak, the 2000 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is evolving more gracefully, offering up a pretty bouquet of dark chocolate, game bird, orange rind and dried red-black fruit. On the palate, the wine is sweet, full-bodied and supple, with good amplitude and a deepish, multidimensional core of ripe fruit. If you own any bottles, start pulling corks.

Vigorous pale ruby. Light nose. The acidity is starting to dominate this. I think it might have been more fun in the past. (JR)
