I have always had a weakness for Engel's immensely appealing 2002 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées, a charming and expressive wine that bursts with aromas of peony, rose petal, sweet berry fruit and cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, it's elegantly enveloping, with lively acids, melting tannins and a long, perfumed finish.

The 2002 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is a dramatic, expressive wine in its youthful plenitude, bursting with aromas of ripe berries, orange rind, rose petal and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and expansive, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a generous core of fruit, concluding with a sappy finish.
The 2002 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees is a wine that I have tasted three or four times, although nothing quite matches this astonishing showing. It has an outstanding bouquet with red fruit, truffle, dried blood and minerals--very typical of this vineyard and just an absolute joy. The palate is supremely well focused with a killer line of acidity, wondrous tension, utterly complex with truffle and almost an animally note on the sustained finish that fans out with such confidence and brio.
